As clubs come to an end, we want to thank our staff and volunteers for all their hard work and maybe you’ll also get a chance to whisper a word of encouragement to them too. Lots of Club and event photos, plus other updates can be found on our FACEBOOK plus other news on our Website. Clubs will re-launch again in late-February – dates to be confirmed.

Breakfast Presentation – in Brief

Thanks for all those who attended this mornings breakfast. We were so encouraged by the early morning turn out and the positive feedback already received. If you were unable to make it, here’s 5 quick points we made in this mornings presentation:

1. We do LOTS of programmes and work with LOTS of children and young people!! We love our work! But our programmes are working with people, and people have many layers you can’t see in the fancy photos and videos, and many of them are hurting, living in dysfunction and looking for help. Our Programmes are a ‘means to an end’ of bringing hope, support, belonging, wellbeing and purpose through our youthworkers, counsellors, Mana Ake Kamahi, volunteers and referrals.

2. Congratulations to the winners of the 2018 Crichton Cobbers Legacy Trophies. Click Here for details.

3. Our focus for 2019…
• Increase in Mentors and Mentees
• Increase in support for Volunteers
• Increase in youthwork hours with teens
• Increase in referrals to support agencies
• Increase in youth led community projects

4. Three funding Shortfalls for 2019…
• Mentoring & Volunteer Coordinator
• Increase in Teen Mentoring Hours
• Replace a 12 seater Van

5. Thanks to all those who told stories and gave endorsements this morning. We created a short video asking young people, parents, teachers and community leaders what they thought about Youth Alive Trust – this is what they said… https://youtu.be/F012beAYX2E

If you, or someone you know, was interested in financially supporting our work through our Friends of YAT initiative, CLICK HERE for a pdf letter with more information. We aim to raise at least an extra $30,000 next year through individual giving. Can you help us achieve that goal?  Thanks!!!

Breakfast Presentation 2018

YAT is again hosting our end of year Supporters, Funders & Donors (& Potential Donors) Breakfast on Tuesday 4th December at 7:00am.  It is our chance to showcase what we’ve achieved this year, through stories, videos, photos and our partners, and enjoy a buffet breakfast of hot and cold food and drink!  There is no cost but RSVP’s must be made by Friday 30th November.  You’re also encouraged to forward this onto any colleagues or friends who may be interested in hearing more about our work or supporting our causes.

Staffing Changes

We’re excited by new staff joining us in the past few months.  Changes include:

  • YAT won a government contract to place mental health support workers into our local primary schools, called Mana Ake.  We have 4 new staff as part of this team: Joel Brittenden, Emma Christie, Sue Dickson and Stephen Dodge.
  • Stephen has left his old position as Programmes Manager for his new role with Mana Ake, and the new Programmes Manager is David Du Preez – with a South African accent.
  • Teish Nicholson has started a new role, as Partnership Coordinator at Beach Campus working with all the trusts and groups using the building, and Daniele Ferreira is the new Financial Administrator.
  • Esther Pickering, a long time volunteer, has started a new role, as Volunteer and Mentoring Coordinator.  This role was created to provide better pastoral care for the many volunteers, mentors and mentees involved at YAT.  There is no new funding for this role yet – so we are on the look out for a new funding source!!
  • Other staff remain the same; James as Trust Manager, alongside Matt, Olivia, Rodger, Paddy & Melissa as youthworkers doing various roles and Josiah coordinating Amplify School of Music.

PORN & NZ Young People Report 2018

The recent explosion of internet technology and unlimited, unregulated and free access to online pornography via mobile devices has dramatically changed the pornography landscape for young people in Aotearoa.

“Porn and Young People – What do we know?” is a 2018 report produced by The Light Project, giving some interesting insights from youth organisations, schools, whanau, therapists and Christian faith based organisations.  The report says that “There is now an increasing body of research that suggests porn is shaping young people’s sexual beliefs, attitudes and behaviours and that it may
be associated with potentially harmful sexual and mental health outcomes.  The findings suggested that 94% of those respondents believe that porn is an issue for young people in Aotearoa. 71% are already engaging in conversations about porn with young people in their workplace, but of these, 59% feel unequipped, reporting a lack of porn knowledge and awareness.”

Check out the full report here and more information in the ‘soon to be launched’ website: www.thelightproject.co.nz
